Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's attempt to militarily annex the Kingdom of Kuwait led to a response by a coalition force led by the United States. Operation Desert Shield was the preparation phase followed by Operation Desert Storm which liberated Kuwait and drove Iraqi forces back to Iraq. Over 60,000 Hoosiers participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
