USMC Dress Uniform

     This pattern of dress blues was worn prior to WWI and throughout the war.  Note the large chevrons and a lack of Eagle, Globe and Anchor collar ornament. The wearing of the ornament was not adopted until after 1918.

Letters from

Private James M. Herrington

(Macy)

     PVT Herrington enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 28, 1918.  Completing his training at Parris Island, South Carolina, he was shipped to France.  He arrived shortly before the armistice, being assigned to 78th Company, 6th Marine Regiment which was part of the U.S. Army's 2nd Division. 

     In this letter home, written in February 1919, PVT Herrington describes the insignia worn by 6th Marines as part of the 2nd Divsion.
